The Hill of Crosses
If you want to visit a peaceful and thought-provoking place, the Hill of Crosses is the right place to go. This amazing site has been built up over hundreds of years by devoted pilgrims from all over the world. Today it bears witness to the faith, patience and determination of Christian believers. The site acquired a special significance during the years 1944 to 1991, when Lithuania was occupied by the USSR. The Soviets bulldozed the site on at least three occasions. Nevertheless, Lithuanians continued to visit the Hill of Crosses and leave their tributes. The Hill of Crosses came to symbolise the commitment to their identity, religion and sovereignty.
You will see crosses of all sizes. Wooden and metal crosses range from three metre high, to very tiny ones hanging from the larger crosses. At the last count there were about 14,400 large and 41,000 small crosses. The number is growing every year. Many crosses carry inscriptions from pilgrims and visitors. Those crosses planted long ago are festooned with tokens and messages. If there is a breeze in the air, you will hear the magical music of rosaries, bells and other hanging tributes tingling together as you approach.
