Palanga
Just 25 km to the north of Klaipeda is the popular seaside resort of Palanga with its long sandy beaches and dunes. In summer evenings tourists are drawn to the Basanaviciaus Street, which has been recently refurbished and is now the pride of Palanga. There are cafes, bars and restaurants on both sides of the street. It leads on to the pier jutting out into the Baltic Sea and is a favourite place for strollers. It seems that in the evenings the whole of Palanga is drawn to this pedestrian precinct and its happy atmosphere.
It is still possible to find a secluded spot in the dunes or in the lovely botanical gardens. The gardens are also home to the famous Amber Museum housed in a 19 c. mansion.
A visit to the Amber Museum will reveal all there is to know about the Baltic gold: its origins, places where amber can be found, processing and jewellery making.
