...A day to remember...

Village Life in Lithuania

This tour is the icing on the cake of a great cruise.

James, Fred Olsen Cruise Lines

Vezaiciai village is just 30 km to the east of Klaipeda. In the 19th century building, which now houses the village cultural centre, you will see exhibits of local art, meet and talk to some of the local people. Learn about the soviet period when thousands of Lithuanians were deported to Siberia and the resistance movement in Lithuania.

A picturesque drive along the Minija River leads to the neighbouring village of Lapiai. Drive through the main street of the village and see the houses and flats built during Soviet times to house the workers of the collective farm. You will learn about village life in the days of the collective farm in Soviet times and how it has changed since Lithuania regained its independence in 1990.

The younger generation of Lapiai are changing from farming to country tourism, which is becoming very popular with holiday-makers, who are nature lovers and want to spend their leisure time in peace and tranquillity.

Driving down to the valley below you will pass a traditional farmstead where people live off the land using the old traditional ways and still use the old farming equipment pulled by a horse.

Stop in the home of the first British Defence Attaché in the newly independent Lithuania, who now lives in the village. Listen to his stories of the part of his life as a bomber pilot in the Royal Air Force, his time as a Defence Attaché in Cold War Moscow and Lithuania. You will be able to visit his refurbished old house (1926) and original outbuildings, wander around the large garden with him and see the Lapiai Castle Hill.

Enjoy home made cake and drinks. Volunteers will be offered a drop of strong locally made moonshine.

Return by bus to Klaipeda. Drive to the Old Town and browse through the amber market.
